Psychological Effects of Power
With anything that you possess, you have an instinct to use it. This is no different with power. When a human figures’ out that he/she has power, they use it. From societies, to individuals, those with power will inflict it on others. Empires have aspired to rule the world, individuals have committed mass genocide, people abuse each other in relationships, and last but not least, some help others. All of these events have happened because someone figured out that they have power, and that they can use it. This is an instinct trained into the human brain, something that comes natural to every living being. There is also an instinct for those with power above them. Every single person naturally has a desire to be free, and to be totally free one must be the only one with complete power over one’s self. As history shows, those with power will inflict it on others, and those with power over them will rebel. Whether any of these things are done in a good or bad way, it’s all instinct.
One of the first individuals to obtain mass amounts of power, who also grew up with power over himself; was Sargon the Great. He developed the world’s earliest known empire, (the Akkadia Empire) which spanned over 800 miles of land and prospered for over a century. Little is known about Sargon the Great, though enough is known to say that at one time he was not a free man. Sargon was born to a farmer and grew up as a king’s cupbearer, living a life of servitude. Old scripts tell about how this king had dreams about Sargon murdering him and tried to have the boy executed. The execution failed by divine intervention and Sargon had the will to kill the king and usurp his throne, this is the instinct to rebel.
